Welcome to east
The European Academy of Surface Technology (east) is a non-profit organisation which represents an International Platform for Science and Technology and an Interface between Research and Application in all Areas of Surface Technology.
east is an international non-profit organisation which solely and directly follows objectives of public utility (with respect to German tax provision).
The overall objective of east is the Europe-wide promotion of science, research, training and education in the fields of surface technology and related areas.
The objectives of east shall be realised especially by the performance of scientific events as well as the support, co-ordination and promotion of research projects.
The basis for the accomplishment of these tasks is the European Board of east, where nearly each European State is represented by one or two members who are recognised in their country as leading specialists in surface technology. Non-European countries are represented by Associated Members. The responsibility for the realisation of activities planned, is with the Executive Board and the Office of east, which are located in Schwäbisch Gmünd at the Research Institute for Precious Metals and Metal Chemistry. east co-operates with national associations, educational and research institutions, as well as the industry of member countries. Individuals, societies, institutions and companies can become Supporting Members.
The practical realisation of the ideas and aims is achieved by Europe-wide press releases, conferences and seminars in the member countries. For realisation of projects of an European dimension in the area of education, further training and research, east closely co-operates with the institutions of the European Commission (EC). Within the scope of several European programmes east significantly contributes to the co-operation and the technology transfer between science and industry.

EAST ANNIVERSARY 2019
EAST celebrated its 30 years anniversary on the 17th of October 2019 in the city of Schwäbisch Gmünd where it all started. The anniversary meeting was conducted as a scientific workshop and a celebration ceremony with invited guests followed by the annual east board meeting. The celebration ceremony was initiated by a presentation of the history of EAST given by David Gabe and Peter Leisner. Thereafter, the lord mayor of the City of Schwäbisch Gmünd, Mr. Richard Arnold expressed his gratitude and acknowledged the contribution of Ali Fuat Cakir, Klaus Eilhoff, David Gabe, Hasso Kaiser, Milko Monev, Wolfgang Schuster (in absentia), Wolfgang Paatsch, and Jean-Claude Puippe in the establishment of EAST.
At the 30 years anniversary celebration it can be concluded that EAST has developed in parallel with the challenges of Europe. EAST has built bridges between European scientists independently of the prevailing political order, and between generations and genders, which makes EAST a modern and relevant organisation ready to meet future challenges.
At the following annual board meeting of EAST it was decided to establish the Schwäbisch Gmünd Scientific Exchange Grant. The purpose is to encourage European cooperation by supporting exchange among European research groups working in the area of surface technology by granting short term exchange for performing specific research or teaching activities. For more information see scientific exchange grant.

Advanced Surface Technology
by Per Møller & Lars Pleth Nielsen
hardcover, 2 volume, 1250 pages
price: 100,- € + shipment
(10,- € discount for European board members of east)
It is truly a “textbook” in two volumes with more than 1250 pages covering practically all relevant techniques of surface treatments and modifications including more than 300 pages on surface characterization. The book is intended both as a universal teaching book for engineers and university students but also as a “bible” for those involved in applied surface treatment and engineers dealing with product development involving surfaces. It is used already at university level in Denmark, Sweden, Norway and Belgium.
The book covers the entire product value chain from surface pretreatment, polishing, electroplating of various metals and alloys, thermal diffusion processes, conversion coatings, anodizing, thermal treatments, thermal spray techniques, vacuum-based processes (PVD, CVD), ion implantation, paint, enamel, corrosion and wear and an introduction to practically all relevant surface characterization techniques.

Advanced Surface Technology
”A holistic view on the extensive and intertwined world of applied surface engineering”
"It is truly a surface bible"
"The present two-volume set of Advanced Surface Technology is arguably the most comprehensive ever to be published in the field of surface finishing. Drs. Per Møller and Lars Pleth Nielsen have devoted years of effort to provide, in their words, ‘a holistic view on the extensive and intertwined world of applied surface engineering"
"The books are clear and the schematic setting makes the reading very pleasant and interesting even for those who are simply looking for up-to-date information and data…… the English language is not an obstacle to understanding. It is clear and linear. This book should not miss among the technical manuals of those who are interested in surfaces and their property. It’s definitely a good tool for those who work in technical offices or produce finishes or treatments on metals, as well as offices and, of course, included in the reference manuals, of whom teaches at the University or in Master Class dedicated to surfaces."
